KUALA LUMPUR: The High Commission of India has urged Indian seafarers bound for East Malaysia to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to official recruitment and safety guidelines amid growing concerns over onboard risks.
In a statement today, the High Commission said Indian citizens must ensure all employment arrangements comply with regulations set by India's directorate general of shipping (DGS) and Malaysia's Marine Department before taking up work on vessels operating in the region.
The advisory comes after reports that some Indian seafarers, initially promised jobs on large commercial vessels, were instead deceitfully assigned to small, high-risk boats in areas including Sibu, Miri, Kuching and Bintulu.
The High Commission warned that these vessels often lack adequate safety standards, exposing workers to hazardous conditions that have, in several cases, resulted in fatalities.
To prevent further incidents, the High Commission outlined mandatory precautions for all prospective seafarers, including engaging only with recruitment and placement agencies registered and approved by India's DGS.
Prospective seafarers were also advised to comply fully with India's Emigrate System and emigration clearance requirements under DGS Crew Circular No. 25 of 2024, and to enter Malaysia only with the correct seafarer visa, rather than via visa-free entry schemes intended for tourists.
