KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans make up approximately 20 percent of the total local seafarers in Malaysia.
Director of Marine Department Datuk Dickson Dollah stated that records from the Marine Department of Malaysia show Sabahans constitute the second-largest group in the country's seafaring industry, thereby demonstrating the state's immense potential within the national maritime sector.
Sabah's youth possess advantages in terms of discipline, resilience, and courage—key traits for success as seafarers.
"Sabah also enjoys a strategic location with an extensive coastline and marine-based economic activities that support the development of the maritime sector and the blue economy," he said while speaking at the Sabah Seafarer Career Aspiration Programme 2026, held here on Thursday in conjunction with the Day of the Seafarer celebration.
According to Dickson, the programme marks the beginning of a national roadshow for Malaysia's maritime industry, with Sabah selected as the first state to host the event."
Sabah has been selected as the first state to host the Sabah Seafarer Career Aspiration Programme 2026, marking the launch of a national maritime industry roadshow.
"This selection serves as recognition of the state's strategic location and the immense potential of its youth in the maritime sector," he said.
He noted that the Certificate of Competency (CoC) issued by the Marine Department Malaysia is internationally recognized, thereby enabling local seafarers to secure employment opportunities either at sea or within the onshore maritime sector.
