One of Asia's largest oil and gas companies is opening a "proof-of-concept" offshore renewable energy centre in Malaysia.
In collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Petronas aims to provide clean power by utilising offshore wind, solar, and wave energy, along with on-site battery storage, at a new facility off the coast of Kuala Terengganu.
Called the Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (CEFORE), Petronas said it represents one of the world’s first integrated models of offshore renewable energy sources with energy storage and management systems.
"We place great emphasis on sustainable development for the future," said chairman Mohd Bakke Salleh.
"In line with this, we hope that CEFORE can serve as a catalyst for the development of renewable energy among future generations.
"It also marks a major step toward our energy future, highlighting Malaysia’s and Terengganu’s commitment to innovation and sustainability."
Petronas added that, along with Institut Teknologi Petroleum Petronas (INSTEP) and UMT, it is preparing talented and skilled professionals for the energy transition, backed by Arema Energies, Schneider Electric, Citaglobal and Honeywell.
CEFORE will also create opportunities for locals, including fishermen who will gain access to free renewable energy-powered ice-making and cold storage facilities.
