Nine crew members from the MV Tung Sung are reported missing after the cargo ship capsized in Sebuyau waters. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) stated that four of the missing seafarers are Malaysian nationals, while the others include four Myanmar citizens and one Indonesian. The ages of the crew range from 20 to 52 years old.
The distress call regarding the incident was made by the ship’s owner, prompting the MMEA to activate a search and rescue operation. The agency’s Sarawak director, First Admiral Zin Azman Md Yunus, confirmed that the MMEA immediately dispatched the vessel KM Kinabalu to the scene. Search efforts were coordinated with partner agencies and local maritime organizations to enhance the operation.
In addition to KM Kinabalu, the search operation included mobilizing KILAT Boat 35 and air support from the Royal Malaysia Police Air Operation Force. These resources reflect the urgency and scale of the search operation in the challenging maritime environment.
A video released by the MMEA showed the cargo ship largely submerged, with only its upturned hull remaining above the water, highlighting the severity of the incident.
